Providing support to parents of gifted children in Wisconsin

Why a Parent Discussion Group?

Parents are a child's first teacher and continue to be throughout the child's life.  To be effective, parents themselves continually need sources of information and support.  Parents of gifted children will find such resources through guided discussion groups.

Using the SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of Gifted) Model for Guided Discussion Groups, parents will find a place to freely talk about their child's development and parenting challenges.

Discussion Group Objectives

  • Provide an environment to support and guide.

  • Increase awareness of the special emotional needs of gifted children and their families.

  • Develop the skills needed for parenting the emotional development of talented children.

  • Provide resources to enhance understanding of gifted/high potential or twice exceptional children as well as programs and opportunities to meet their needs.

Topics include

  • Characteristics of Gifted Children

  • Communication

  • Motivation, Enthusiasm, and Underachievement

  • Discipline and Self-Management

  • Intensity, Perfectionism, and Stress

  • Idealism, Unhappiness, and Depression

  • Acquaintances, Friends, Peers, and Bullying

  • Family Relationships

  • Values, Traditions, and Uniqueness

  • Successful Parenting, Media, and Talent

One or both parents are welcome to attend and do not need to have a formally identified child.  SENG groups are designed to help parents connect with other parents in a meaningful way. To facilitate this, groups are limited in size. Registration will be on a first come basis. If there are more interested people than space allows, parents will be added to a waitlist for future discussion groups. If we have fewer than six households register, we will have to cancel because of the difficulty of maintaining momentum in discussions with such a small group. If cancellation happens, your cost will be refunded.
